What would Florence Nightingale do?
She was an icon and a visionary, but by all accounts, Nurse Flo’ was a bitter misanthrope, a rabid racist (and likely anti-semitic, too, as a woman of her day – our day, too, it seems.) The dominance of her narrative overshadows that of other nurse pioneers. (Read The Wisdom of Nurses by Amie Archibald-Varley and Sara Fung to learn more.) Nonetheless, she was the one who came up with the “radical” idea that Nursing was a profession that required scientific knowledge and expertise. (Who knew?) She was an early proponent of “holistic” care, an elusive goal in today’s health care environment. Still, I bet she’d have embraced technology and grasped its potential to serve patients.
